SYNOPSIS

“Dare to Rewild,” a film by Black Bean Productions, follows Mark and Sarah Tompkins on their ambitious journey to restore South Africa’s Great Karoo. In 1997, they set out to heal a landscape stripped of its natural abundance, where fences had replaced free-roaming wildlife and ecosystems teetered on collapse. Over 25 years, their conservation vision has transformed 67,000 acres, working toward a bold goal: creating South Africa’s third- largest protected area in a Global Biodiversity Hotspot. Once home to one of the world’s greatest migrations, the Karoo’s vast plains had been silenced—until now. With the reintroduction of cheetahs, elephants, and lions after more than a century, Samara is witnessing the return of species long lost to history. Partnering with ecologists and local communities, the Tompkinses embrace rewilding as a powerful tool for restoration, proving that nature, when given the chance, can reclaim its rhythm.
